How To Care For Your Taxidermy Mounts

Taxidermy mounts are more than just decorations; they are cherished trophies that tell stories of adventure and the wild—a perfect fit for any Wild Clone enthusiast. Proper care is essential to ensure your mounts retain their beauty and remain a source of pride for years to come. Here’s how to keep your collection in pristine condition:

1. Choose the Right Display Location

·Keep Away from Direct Sunlight: UV rays can fade colours and degrade materials over time. Position your mounts in shaded areas.

·Maintain a Stable Environment: Taxidermy thrives in consistent temperature and humidity levels

2. Gentle Dusting is Key

·Use a soft-bristle brush, microfiber cloth, or feather duster to remove dust.

·Work top-down to avoid spreading debris.

·For intricate details like antlers or feathers, try a small paintbrush or compressed air for precision cleaning.

3. Special Care for Fur, Feathers and Horns

·Fur: Keep it smooth and tidy with a soft-bristle pet brush, always brushing in the natural direction of the hair.

·Feathers: Lightly wipe with a damp (not wet) microfiber cloth, following the natural alignment of the feathers.

-Horns: Spraying horns with penetrating oil twice a year and wiping them down is an excellent maintenance tip for preserving the natural beauty of horns on mounted trophies. The penetrating oil helps protect the horns from drying out, cracking or becoming brittle , while the wiping removes dust and debris, keeping them looking their best.

4. Stay Vigilant Against Pests

·Inspect your mounts regularly for signs of pests, such as small holes, loose fur, or debris.

5. Say No to Harsh Chemicals

·Avoid household cleaners or sprays, as they can harm the delicate materials of your mount.

·Opt for mild, taxidermy-safe cleaning solutions for deeper cleaning needs.

6. Handle with Respect

·Always support the base or mount when moving it to distribute weight evenly.

·Never lift by fragile areas like antlers, ears, or tails to prevent damage.

7. Display Thoughtfully

·Wall mounts should be secured with proper hardware to avoid accidents.

·Freestanding mounts should be placed on stable surfaces and away from high-traffic areas to prevent bumps or falls.

8. Control Humidity Levels

·Use a dehumidifier in humid environments to prevent mold or mildew.

·In arid climates, a humidifier can help maintain proper moisture levels to prevent cracking or drying out.
